Scandinavian Group 2nd Round (Football), European GAA, Malmo , Saturday, June 27th, 2009.

It was approximately a month since the teams of Copenhagen, Gothenburg and Malmo met in the Scandinavian Group (Football) hosted by Gothenburg. This time Malmo had the honour of hosting the games at Limhamnsfältet in Malmo. Weather conditions were bright sunshine, temperatures of in excess of 25C with a strong wind blowing down the field.

First up on the pitch was the clash between Copenhagen and Gothenburg. For the first half, Copenhagen worked well as a team, but scoring chances were few they only managed to put one point on the score board. In contrast, Gothenburg failed to register any scores in the first half. With the opening of the second half, Gothenburg started strong and registered a point followed by two goals in quick succession. Copenhagen managed to stay in the game with a goal thanks to the combined efforts of Phil Murray and Dave O'Connell. However, this was not enough to ensure victory as Gothenburg kept up the momentum and added three further points to their tally. At the final whistle, the score line stood at
Copenhagen 1-1, Gothenburg 2-4.

Next up on the pitch was Malmo versus Gothenburg. From the outset, it was clear that Malmo had a hugely stronger team than what they had fielded only a month ago in Gothenburg. Their handling of the ball was exemplary and accuracy of point taking impressive. Gothenburg were unable to mount a successful counter attack, and the Malmo finished strong with the final score of
Malmo 1-11, Gothenburg 0-6.

The final match of the day was between Copenhagen and Malmo. Once again, Malmo clearly showed that they were a team with significant new blood, and quickly put three points on the board. Copenhagen briefly counter attacked from the back with Mark Hasset moving the ball up the pitch, with Rob Walsh finishing off with a point. This was not to be enough, despite gallant defence by Copenhagen, Malmo stretched their lead by adding several more points, and then followed by three goals. An injury forced the exit of Mark from the pitch, and a hasty regrouping by the Copenhagen team, saw the Copenhagen trainer, Bert Lane, moving from the side-line onto the pitch. Bert put in practice some of what he has been preaching at training, and swiftly buried the ball in the back of the Malmo net. This was to the final score of the day, but was not enough to breach the large gap that had opened up between the teams. Malmo finished the clear winners, with the final score standing at
Malmo 3-12, Copenhagen 1-3.

Malmo has emerged as a very strong team within Scandinavia, by not only wining the tournament on the day, but also wining the Scandinavia region due to their high scoring tally. Truly, an impressive feat for the newly formed club, and clearly demonstrates the development of the game in the region. Thanks go out to Malmo for hosting the tournament and to John Kelleher for his excellent refereeing on the day

Scandinavian Group (Football), European GAA, Gothenburg , Saturday, May 2nd, 2009.

Over the last number of years Copenhagen and Gothenburg have played a number of friendly matches in both football and hurling. Indeed, these early encounters provided the first real match experience for Copenhagen prior to playing in the European Football Championship & Shield. Ironically, Copenhagen has had a better track record against Gothenburg in the hurling clashes than in the football. However, with the formation in 2009 of the Scandinavian Group (Football) within the European GAA, future clashes between the clubs have now been formalised. Thus, the first round of the Scandinavian Group (Football) was hosted by Gothenburg at the Spartacus Rugby grounds on Saturday, May 2nd, 2009. Currently, the Scandinavian Group comprises the clubs of Copenhagen, Gothenburg, Malmo and Oslo. Unfortunately, Oslo was forced to cancel their participation in the tournament at very short notice.

Copenhagen's first match on the day was against the newly formed Malmo club. While the game was competitive, it was clear within the first 5 minutes that Copenhagen was sufficiently strong to ensure victory over Malmo. An impressive final score was, Copenhagen 4-08, Malmo 2-02. Gothenburg, having also beaten Malmo (Gothenburg 4-08, Malmo 0-03) in an earlier match, meant that the old rivals would meet in the final. This match was to be a much closer and more keenly fought contest, as was correctly predicted (warned!) by Copenhagen's Trainer, Bert Lane prior to the game. The teams were evenly matched throughout the game, which each team matching each others efforts with only a 1 to 2 point margin separating the teams at any point. However, a key turning point of the game was about halfway into the second half when Copenhagen's Goalie, Andy Rositch made a magnificent save. This gave Copenhagen a boost on which they rapidly capitalised, and enabled them to pull away from Gothenburg. The final score line was Copenhagen 3-01, Gothenburg 1-02. A great effort was put in by all the Copenhagen players in order to ensure a victorious outcome to the club's first formal competitive match against Gothenburg. Sean Coogan managed an impressive 4 goal tally in the 2 games, which must be a new record for him! On the day Copenhagen fielded a strong team, with a mixture of Òold reliablesÓ and some new blood too. The new faces sporting the Copenhagen colours were, Simon Conheady, Tom Hughes, Eoin Bevan, Adrian Kruszynski and St. John Walsh.

Thanks go out to Gothenburg for hosting the tournament and for the excellent facilities provided. In addition, special thanks also goes out to John Kelleher for his excellent referring on the day
